Bacteria migrating to the bladder from the colon are thought to be the cause of some bladder infections. Probiotics have been theorized to help prevent bladder infections by reducing the population of dangerous bacteria in the digestive tract.

In this study, cranberry juice proved much more effective than probiotic treatment. Significantly fewer women in the cranberry group came down with bladder infections over the study period.

Unfortunately, while interesting, this study does not prove cranberry effective.

First, it wasn’t a double-blind trial. Participants and physicians knew who was taking cranberry and who was taking probiotics. This allows the power of suggestion to play a role. For example, if the participants or the researchers had more confidence in cranberry than in Lactobacillus GG, that expectation could easily skew the results.

In addition, there was no placebo group in this study. What if Lactobacillus GG actually increases the rate of bladder infections? If so, cranberry could have been completely ineffective, but still do better than the probiotic.

What we need is a double-blind placebo-controlled trial that is otherwise similar to the one just described. Until one is performed, we still don’t really know whether cranberry can help the common problem of frequent bladder infections.

Prepared from variety special minerals, organic compounds, detox pads are meant to work during the night for boosting your energy levels, blood circulation and also metabolism.

Native Americans used cranberry for the treatment of kidney and bladder diseases. Today, many women with frequent bladder infections use cranberry in the hopes of preventing the next recurrence. However, the evidence that cranberry works for this purpose is surprisingly weak.

Only one double-blind study has found cranberry effective for any kind of bladder infection.1 However, this trial did not look at women with frequent bladder infections. Rather, it studied a different problem: older women with bacteria in the urine but no symptoms. Cranberry did reduce the amount of bacteria in the urine, but the relevance of this study’s findings to the normal use of cranberry is unclear. In addition, the study has been criticized for some significant flaws in its procedures.2,3

Another study looked at cranberry for preventing bladder infections in children with a chronic bladder condition called neurogenic bladder.4 No benefit was seen, but again this study does not address the most common use of cranberry.

A more recent study did evaluate cranberry for preventing bladder infections.5 This 12-month trial of 150 women compared cranberry and a different treatment: probiotics (friendly bacteria). Acidophilus is the most famous probiotic, but this study used a different type, Lactobacillus GG.

Every individual’s experience with asthma is different. Some children outgrow their asthma. Some children develop asthma symptoms again later in life and some have asthma symptoms throughout their lives.

In adults who develop asthma, some have symptoms that get worse. Others can have spontaneous improvement, and may have no symptoms for years. No one can predict the course the disease will take in any individual. Every year, however, new drugs are being developed. More and more patients are taking a more active role in their own care, and the disease is far more manageable than it was even 50 years ago.

Much current research is focused on the body’s immune system and its relationship to inflammation in the bronchial tubes.

Several new treatments are currently being tested that are aimed at blocking the actions of different components of the immune system that thought to be involved in asthma.

The prospect for new and more effective asthma treatments is bright.

Do you want specific suggestions for engendering friendship among siblings? Parent educator and author Mary Sheedy Kurcinka (“Kids, Parents and Power Struggles, HarperCollins, $23) and Myrna B.Shure, Ph.D., a developmental psychologist in Philadelphia and author of “Raising a Thinking Child” (Henry Holt, $23) offer these tips for fostering healthy relationships among siblings:

Foster empathy among siblings — They won’t care about others if they don’t care about themselves. Talk about how your child feels when someone takes his toy away, for example, and how he thinks his brother feels when he grabs a toy from him.

Set standards — Everyone in the family should agree not to physically or emotionally abuse one another. Demand that siblings listen to each other.
Validate individuality — Let each child know he or she is loved. Praise their strengths and assets.

Model conflict resolution — Be realistic. Anger happens, but teach your children that because sibling relationships are valued, they will try to resolve the conflict.

Allow your kids to fight — Issues just get bigger when fighting is prohibited, and the children do not develop skills for conflict resolution and negotiation.
Don’t solve the battles — Give the children a chance to find their own solution.

Always ask, don’t tell — When a child wants to know why his sister gets to stay up later, ask them why they think it’s allowed. Get your child to tell you what he already knows. It’s more effective.

Create a sense of family trust — Your kids will then learn to trust each other.

A person who constantly weighs herself may try not weighing herself for increasingly longer periods of time (e.g., at first a few hours, then a day, and so on). Encouraging pleasurable behaviors that make a person’s body feel good is another important treatment intervention. Teaching relaxation skills is another important element of the treatment. This gives individuals skills they can use when the urge to engage in body-image behaviors strikes.

Treatment for avoidance behaviors involves helping individuals eliminate the avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations by exposing them to these situations. By virtue of their confronting the feared situation, they may improve their coping skills and reduce or perhaps even eliminate their body-image anxiety. Interventions include first enabling the individual to feel comfortable viewing his or her own body in privacy. This may be accomplished by creating a hierarchy of first imagined and then real distressing aspects of viewing themselves clothed and unclothed in a full-length mirror. Other exposure assignments include eating in public, working out in public, wearing form-fitting clothing, undressing in front of others, and accentuating a distressing feature. Assignments should increase in difficulty by varying the familiarity with the circumstances. Individuals are asked to compare their expected outcome of each assignment/experiment with the actual outcome. Most people find that the dreaded outcome they feared does not occur. Relaxation skills are also important for avoidance behaviors. These skills can be used when the individual confronts a distressing situation. Addressing these behavioral dimensions can ultimately help individuals change the way they think and feel about their body.

The overall treatment goal is to help individuals who have negative body image become comfortable with their body’s appearance. This includes not letting any negative thoughts or feelings change their behaviors and interfere with their daily life. As discussed earlier, behaviors do not occur in isolation. They are closely connected with our thoughts and feelings. Addressing the behaviors should go hand-in-hand with examining the body- image-related thoughts and feelings.

One of the first steps in treatment is identifying the individual’s specific types of body-image and avoidance behaviors. Keeping a journal of body-image thoughts and corresponding behaviors can help individuals become more aware of how their body image impacts their life. This helps to identify those behaviors that they should target for change.

Treatment for the body-image and avoidance behaviors is quite different. Both require practice and the willingness to experiment with doing assignments that may at first seem daunting. Changing overly engaged behaviors involves helping individuals cease their ritualistic, compulsive body checking, weighing, or whatever the particular behavior involves. Examples include setting a fixed time for dressing and eliminating body-checking behavior tools (e.g., removing scales, tape measures, and special clothes).

Stress can “add fuel to the fire” of hot flushes. When women feel stressed in some way, they may experience the physical manifestations associated with the hot flush (such as warm, visible flushing or sweating) that cause additional stress or give others the exaggerated appearance that we are not in control.
But how is stress associated with hot flushes? The temperature controlling, or thermoregulatory, centers in a woman’s brain area are in close proximity to estrogen receptors, as well as epinephrine and norepinephrine receptors. During stress, your body undergoes various degrees of the “flight or fight” response, and releases both norepinephrine and epinephrine. These contribute to heightened attention and anxiety, as well as an increased pulse rate as our bodies adjust to deal with the stressful event.

The released epinephrine and norepinephrine can potentially stimulate estrogen receptors, causing fluctuations in estrogenic response. We know that some women are very susceptible to changes in estrogenicity and more prone to subsequent hot flushes.

Stress reduction can help reduce the incidents of hot flushes. By helping to keep the body in a steady state, hot flushes can be prevented.

Simple Stress Reducers
Any type of relaxation exercise can help control and reduce hot flushes. These exercises include yoga, meditation and physical exercise, as well as many other forms of relaxation. It is important to find out which technique works best for you. If one technique is not working, try another one until you find the calming, relaxing techniques that work best for you.

One simple technique that works for me is something I learned in mind-body training at Harvard. This is something that you can do any time, doesn’t need an extended physical space, and no one need know you are doing it. Here is an example of the relaxation technique:

Take a deep cleansing breath in and out.

Slowly (and silently) count from one to five, and then backward from five to one. If necessary, repeat this technique going from one to four, then four to one, then from one to three, then from three to one, etc., and back down to zero.

Another technique might be:

Take a deep cleansing breath in and out.
Close your eyes and think of a place you find relaxing. Try to imagine yourself in this setting for a few moments. Obviously, you don’t want to do this while driving or operating any type of machinery.

Exciting new research is expanding the understanding and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Early and aggressive treatment is today’s philosophy, and results show researchers and doctors are on the right track.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
For reasons still not understood, the autoimmune system, which is the body’s defense against infection, attacks tissue around the joints, causing pain and inflammation.

In addition, tumor necrosis factor, or TNF — a blood protein that seeks out cancerous cells — attracts the T-cells (lymphocytes) that cause inflammation. This results in swelling and pain in joints. TNF also produces an enzyme that destroys the joints.

What Causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Research indicates that there is no single cause (or trigger) for RA. Extreme stress, trauma and even some viruses can trigger the disease. While work continues in this area, much of the current research concentrates on stopping the autoimmune response once it is set off.

What Are the Latest Treatments?
Drugs that selectively attack the causes of RA symptoms are producing results. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Celebrex and Vioxx — which work on the inflammation-causing Cox-2 enzyme without destroying the beneficial Cox-1 enzyme — are proving extremely effective in reducing inflammation and pain from RA and osteoarthritis (OA).

The disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) Enbrel and Arava, on the market since 1998, are in the news for new reasons. Both drugs inhibit or “soak up” excess TNF, which causes pain and inflammation, and attracts inflammatory T-cells. They also prevent joint damage, which is an unexpected benefit.

Arava and Enbrel, usually given in conjunction with methotrexate (a popular treatment for RA that can produce severe side effects), are proving effective when given alone. To avoid the side effects of methotrexate, many rheumatologists are initially trying Arava or Enbrel alone.

Doctors had feared that eliminating TNF and T-cells would result in an increase in opportunistic diseases or cancers, which are possible side effects with less selective drugs. However, more than four years of studies show that these fears are unfounded.

According to Michael Pickrell, M.D., a rheumatologist with the Austin Diagnostic Clinic in Texas, “Rheumatology used to be the Rip Van Winkle field. You could sleep for 20 years and still practice medicine, because there had been no progress in treatment.” That certainly is no longer the case.

Acne can be tough on teens — and it can be pretty rough on their parents and other family members, too.

“Acne can profoundly affect a teen-ager’s self-esteem and confidence at a sensitive time in their personal growth and development,” said Donna Ford, president of the American Counseling Association, a private nonprofit organization for professional counselors. “Research has shown that even mild cases can cause anxiety and depression and interfere with a teen-ager’s social life, family relationships — even their schoolwork and job opportunities.”

The ACA recently launched a Web site called “Healthy Skin, Healthy Outlook” to help teens deal with acne, understand its causes and seek appropriate treatment. (Dermik Laboratories, Inc. sponsors the site.) The site also offers teens and their parents professional advice on the psychological and social impact of teen acne and how to offer support to teens suffering from this skin disease.

“We want to reassure teen-agers that acne is not their fault — they shouldn’t feel singled out, guilty or embarrassed about it,” Ford said. “This is one teen problem teens can do something about — talk with their parents about seeking medical treatment.

Here is place in which you can find competent advise and high quality cheap prescription drugs to treat a wide collection of different diseases.

I have a confession to make. Although I assist others in uncluttering their lives, simplifying my own life remains a “work in progress.” Almost outside of my awareness, my “To Do” list takes on a life of its own. I wake up most Saturday mornings already overwhelmed by what the day has in store for me.
I am happy to report, however, that I am making progress! I have learned that simplifying my life isn’t so much about working faster or finding shortcuts. And I probably don’t need to move to a cabin in Idaho to achieve it. In fact, I would be just as adept at complicating things in Idaho!

The overriding reason for life’s complications is that we lose perspective about what’s important to us. We don’t stop to remember our values, priorities and goals, and we unwittingly put energy into all of the wrong things. In other words, we struggle to paddle upstream in the rowboat of life, rather than taking advantage of the current and getting where we want to go with grace and ease.

Who Would You Invite for Cappuccino?
It is a glorious summer day and you are going out on your rowboat. You grab your trusty, battery-operated cappuccino machine. You decide to invite two famous people along (living or dead) to join you for java. Who would you choose? What would you most like to ask them? And what would you like them to know about you?

Your answers will tell you a lot about what’s important to you — i.e., your priorities. List your priorities in order of importance. Post your list in a prominent place — how about on the refrigerator, under one of those tacky fridge magnets? Frequently during the course of a day, ask yourself the following questions:

Does what I am about to do support my priorities?
Does it contribute to my well-being?
Must it be done now?
Does it ever have to be done?
Keeping your priorities top of mind is central to simplifying your life. And there are other important steps you can take to avoid paddling upstream:

Change the way you think — Without realizing it, most of us engage in endless mental chatter about the past and future. This internal dialogue is usually stressful, and rarely productive. It keeps us from enjoying the present, and makes us go unconscious about what we are doing now, and why. When you catch yourself stuck in the past or future, shift all of your attention to something/anything in your current environment — a vase of flowers, your pet iguana or a paper clip. Notice its shape, color and texture. This exercise will bring you immediately back to the present and away from your distracting internal chatter. So now you’ve simplified things a bit more …

Change what you think, or think nothing at all — Make time each day to do something enjoyable, just for you. This something should take you completely away from your “list.” Feed some ducks, finger paint or play the harmonica. “How will doing yet one more thing simplify my life?” you ask. Here’s how: When you go back to your routine you will feel refreshed and relaxed. You will be better able to notice all of the irrelevant items on your list, and “x” them out!

Stop and think — We women automatically agree to do things, only to realize half a second later that we should have said “no.” Solution: Make your new mantra, “I’ll get back to you.”

Remembering to keep it simple isn’t easy. But every time I do, I notice how much lighter my oars feel. Hope you enjoy your ride downstream as much as I do!
